Once or twice a year designers will sell items that are out of season. Even though designers are so far ahead when it comes to fashion trends, the items are “in season” to many who are lucky enough to find these sample sales in New York City. Sample sales are mostly held in hotel conference rooms, warehouses, vacant retail spaces, tents, anywhere that’s convenient for the designers collection to shine while being sold. Here are a few New York City sample sales shopping tips:

1. Have A Plan
Be sure to know where the sample sales are being held. Don’t come spontaneously and think it will be easy to go from one sale to another. Main reason being that the sales aren’t always announced or you won’t see always see signs that indicate a sale is happening. If you might need an appointment call before you go, not when you get there. Plan, plan, plan.

2. Know How To Navigate
Figuring out a route to check the best way to get around to your sample sales will save you lots of time. It is New York City after all. Blocks can be long. So if you are going to a sample sale on 6th avenue and 34th street, check to see if your next stop is near.

3. Check Your Merchandise
NYC Sample Sales are final. If you discover a tear after you’ve bought the item its too late. Some thing are fine like buttons, zippers etc that you may not mind repairing yourself. But check before hand.

4. Come Dressed Prepared
Many NYC sample sales vicinities do not have dressing rooms. Wear something that you can easily slip on and off. Be sure to wear flat or comfortable shoes. Aching feet can put a damper in your shopping experience.

5. Don’t Buy Just Because A Designers Name Is On It
Maybe an item didn’t sell for a good reason. The cut of the design didn’t fit well, unattractive shoes. A designer putting their name on something doesn’t necessarily mean the item is perfect.

6. The Early Bird Catches The Worm/The Later Bird Get The Best Prices
Come early if you want to catch the very best selection, come late if you want the best prices. Difficult choice. Designers and manufactures want to get rid of leftover merchandise so as the end of the sale approaches prices will come down.

Other tips are bring cash. Some may take credit and debit cards others not. Most prefer payments in cash.
